Of Butchers and Saints

Butchers and Saints

One butcher came to Nan-in. He was a butcher and Nan-in was a Buddhist monk who believed in non-violence. His whole profession was of violence. The whole day he was killing animals. But when the butcher came to Nan-in, he asked him, ”What am I to do? My profession is one of violence. So am I to leave my profession first and is it that only then I can be a new man, or is there some other way?” Nan-in said, ”We are not concerned with what you do. We are concerned with what you are. So you go on doing whatsoever you are doing, but be more alert. While killing, remain alert, meditative, and go on doing whatsoever you are doing.

Celebs and Meditation: Hugh Jackman

Hugh Jackman enjoys meditating with his children.

The 'Wolverine' star, who has a son, Oscar, 13, and daughter, Ava, 9, with his wife Deborra-Lee Furness, claims sitting in a room quietly together on a regular basis has changed their lives.

The 45-year-old Australian star told UsMagazine.com: "I said [to one our our teachers] what do we do with the kids if we want to mediate? He said, 'Just be quiet in the house and tell the kids they don't have to mediate' -- they were young. But say, 'There's no TV, there's no talking, you can read, do whatever you want.' And what we found is we would meditate."
He added: "We got used to a quiet time together in the house. Now they're sort of naturally getting into it. Meditation has changed our lives."

Deborra added: "They just sit in a room with us. They loved it . . . They would be upset when the time ended. They sit there, they'd draw. They knew that they had to be quiet, but it made us all be together without using words or anything. But energetically we were all together sitting comfortably in our truth which is what this meditation is."

Hugh made his first red carpet appearance the David Lynch Foundation Presents: Change Begins Within Benefit Gala in New York City on Tuesday (12.03.13), since revealing on Instagram last month that he underwent treatment for skin cancer on his nose, and wore a small Band-Aid over the area.

Why is there suffering and poverty in the world?

Who is poor who is rich is decided by certain standards that certain societies have set. 10.000 years a go living in a cave was a luxury. If you had a good cave for yourself and something to cover yourself, it was a great life. Definitely the world is poor, because in spite of of all this comforts and conveniences that science has heaped upon us, still people are living joyless. Still people are living not knowing how to live. We know how to go to the Mars but we still don't know how to live on this planet. That's definitely poverty."

Subway Yoga

There are many ways to popularize yoga among men.Yoga, which in Sanskrit means union, should not be seen as anything feminine, it's almost like saying that driving a car is purely man's affair. So don't wait and get on the mat!

Use your Sensibility not Morality

Sensibility not Morality

Sadhguru tells us about the need to be immoral! Because of the imposition of moral rules, human beings have been constrained to act according to an idea of goodness, which, when we consider the state of the world today, has obviously not worked. Sadhguru encourages us to activate our humanity, rather than mortgage our intelligence to a notion of morality.

The last thing you will do in your life

ARTICLE EXPELLED FROM HUFFPOST

You need to understand this: Everything that you can experience is life. What you call "death" is also life. So, are there choices about death? There are, definitely. What you are referring to as death is just the last moment of life as you know it for now; that final moment when you transcend the limitations of your physical body happens only once in this lifetime. Almost everything in your life may happen many times over. But this one thing happens only once in your lifetime and it is the last thing that you do. I want you to understand death as life, not something else. This is the last act of your life. Is it not very important that you choose to make it happen gracefully and wonderfully? If you are fearful of it, if you are ignorant of the ways of life and you create resistance towards it, naturally you will miss that possibility, and the very thought of it is torturous.

Athletes who meditate to improve their game

Article Outsourced from:
HuffinghtonPost.com/Lifestyle
It's commonly said that sports are 90 percent mental and only 10 percent physical. A lack of focus can result in a missed three-point shot, nerves can cause a gymnast to fall out of her landing, and a momentary lapse in confidence can easily make the difference between gold and bronze. So it's no surprise that some of the best professional athletes in the sports world are turning to meditation -- which has been shown to reduce stress and improve focus -- to boost their game and ease the anxiety of high-pressure performances.   READ MORE >>

Yoga in an african prison - photos+story

“We are not going to change the whole world, but we can change ourselves and feel free as birds. We can be serene even in the midst of calamities and, by our serenity, make others more tranquil. Serenity is contagious. If we smile at someone, he or she will smile back. And a smile costs nothing. We should plague everyone with joy. If we are to die in a minute, why not die happily, laughing?” ~ Swami Satchidananda, The Yoga Sutras

INSPIRING! An airborne ranger continues yoga after becoming paralyzed from the waist down

Howie Sanborn an Airborne Ranger

After joining the U.S. Army in 2000 as an Airborne Ranger, Howie Sanborn served two tours in Iraq and became a member of the army's parachute team, the Golden Knights. Sanborn has performed 2,500 free fall parachute jumps at events across the country. About five years ago, he started participating in triathlons, which involve a combination of swimming, cycling and running. He joined a yoga class on the base in Fort Bragg, N.C. to make himself stretch more in preparation for the events. He wound up going several times a week and began training to become a certified yoga instructor. In September 2012, when Sanborn was about 140 hours into his 200-hour yoga training, he and a friend went on a bike ride. A distracted driver hit the two men, and Sanborn became paralyzed from the waist down.

An offering to mother earth

Earth Day 2013
On April 22nd 2013 for Earth Day, we invite you to take the opportunity to get your hands muddy planting a tree, creating a herb garden or planting colorful flowering plants around the Isha institute of Inner Sciences.

Trees are our closest relatives. What they exhale, we inhale; what we exhale, they inhale and keep our lives going.” – Sadhguru

When I first experienced a deep state of meditation

Meditation painting

Dear all,
I've received the following email from 21 year old ecology student who has recently learned the Isha Kriya meditation. This is just another great example of what can meditation do to an open and willing person - the the only two conditions you need to begin. The story truly moved me and it once again helped me recognize what is being offered here in the form of Isha Yoga.

Even if you have to give up a meal, do it... but do not give up meditation.

Happy buddha

Even if you have to give up a meal, do it... but do not give up meditation. The more regular you are, the greater depth you will attain. And meditation is such a delicate thing that it takes months to grow but just a day or two to wither away. A delicate thing needs much regularity, continuity. MEDITATION IS THE HIGHEST; EVERYTHING ELSE IS SECONDARY. You will not miss much by missing a day's sleep. One can do without sleeping for five to seven days. It is okay if you miss a meal; man can survive without food for three months. You can go without drinking water for a day; you will not die.

A lawsuit against yoga practices at school in California

Children Namaste

A civil lawsuit was filed Feb. 15 against the Encinitas Union School District in San Diego County alleging that the district, by providing instruction in Ashtanga yoga, is thereby “promoting religious beliefs.”
The action was filed by The National Center for Law & Policy, an Escondido, Calif.-based nonprofit “legal defense organization” focusing on “protection and promotion of religious freedom, the sanctity of life, traditional marriage, parental rights and other civil liberties.”

NCLP attorney Dean R. Broyles filed the lawsuit on behalf of plaintiffs Stephen and Jennifer Sedlock, parents whose children attend schools in the district.“EUSD’s Ashtanga yoga program represents a serious breach of the public trust,” Broyles said in a press release.“The program is extremely divisive and has unfortunately led to the harassment, discrimination, bullying and segregation of children who, for good reasons, opt out of the program,” he added.

Congressman Tim Ryan: Meditation is the silent revolution

Politics equals stress, corruption, arrogance, a lack of interest in common people, and I am sure each one of you will add something of your own. Unfortunately many of these things are true, and still happening  in the top politics across the globe. Once again the question rises "are all the politicians corrupted?"
After all that we've seen on the political grounds, there seem to be a hope.

Catholic church opens up to yoga and mediation

ROME- With a surprising twist of flexibility, a key Italian bishop and doctrinal expert has given his green light to integrating yoga and meditation into Roman Catholic spiritual practices. Monsignor Raffaello Martinelli, the bishop of the city of Frascati, near Rome, said that he is "open" to forms of eastern meditation previously rejected by the Vatican, as long as they are used in conjunction with the framework of Christian spirituality, writes La Stampa.

Kevin Garnett: NBA's star diggs Yoga

This is a really interesting article from  greenstreet.weei.com. Another NBA star player, this time Kevin Garnett, have discovered the phenomenal benefits of simple Hata Yoga. After several Atlanta Hawk's team  members, Garnett is just another NBA's player digging deeper in to the ancient practice. In an interview, he shares about balancing and calming effect yoga has up on him. The trend of more and more public figures, who are getting in to yoga, continues, which is a great contribution to the entire society. I am sure that it is just a matter of time until some "star" shows up here at the I I I.

Atlanta Hawks add yoga into the mix

Bow Pose by Ivan Johnson
Atlanta Hawks center Zaza Pachulia slips out of his sneakers, kneels on a yoga mat and exhales.
Sitting on the back of his heels, Pachulia lowers his upper body onto his thighs. He stretches his arms out in front of him. With his body folded, only his long arms hint at his towering height of 6 feet 11 inches. Clad in baggy gray sweatpants, Pachulia smoothly glides from one yoga pose to the next — Downward-Facing Dog, Warrior Pose and the Tree Pose.

Concepts of Anatomy Trains

Western anatomy as we know it has been around for more than 500 years and still forms the foundation for the study of medicine and the approach to medical practice. But what if the anatomy texts of the past 500-plus years got it -- at least partially -- wrong? This is the argument of a growing number of researchers, including author Tom Myers, Dr. Stephen Levin, Dr. Donald E. Ingber and Tom Flemons, to name just a few.

Elvis Presley did yoga?

Imagine Elvis Presley doing sun salutation! Believe it or not, this rock'n roll star was a meditating vegetarian and also a yoga practitioner. He reportedly said that:  "I know some of the things I think are kind of far out… and I don’t meet a lot of people that I can relate to, and those that I do meet need to know more about their spiritual selves.”

Christian fundamentalists freak out over yoga in the military

Cross-legged Yoga Pose

An excerpt from: www.salon.com

With a temporary ceasefire declared in the war over Christmas, fundamentalist Christian conservatives are looking for other places that religion may be under attack — and one radical thinks that that place may be the military.

Tony Perkins, the head of the Family Research Council, a right-wing Christian think tank that has been classified as a hate group, has flipped out over a “wacky” new initiative being tested in U.S. military training programs. No, it’s not the end of “don’t ask, don’t tell” — it’s yoga and meditation classes.
